The purpose of The Commons Climbing Gym was to fill a void in the climbing community caused by the closing of Urban Ascent, a small locally owned Boise climbing gym, which shut down in the Spring of 2018. Previous managers, employees and customers of Urban Ascent gathered and purchased three existing buildings on the Boise Bench.

Together with Wright Brothers the Building Company and Neudesign Architecture, the owners designed an inventive space that would bridge two of the existing buildings, creating one 12,000 square foot gym. The Commons features 14,500 SF of climbing space with up to 160 roped and bouldering routes and 45-foot tall roped walls. This extensive remodel required the demolition of the entire roof system and floor of the central building, leaving a shell of exterior walls, storefront window systems and doors. Around this shell additional steel was added and the main gym came to life. In total the new space includes a climbing gym, a bouldering area, a weight room, newly finished restrooms, a new reception area and isolated yoga studio.
